  • Back = betting on win. The opposite is Lay. The term “Back” is used on Betting exchange markets.
  • Banker = the bet which you would like to have on each combination of system bet (MILTIPLE BETS)
  • Bonus = usually you get a bonus for signing up with a new bookie. It can be bonus on first deposit, another option is free stake which you get alongside your first deposit (e.g. free 1000 Kč bet with Betclic). You will also get a bonus for entering casino or poker rooms.
  • CVC2 = Card Verification Code is used as a security in online payments by your credit card. This code consists of 3 digits which you can find on the back side of your card. If you can´t find the code contact your bank.
  • Derby = the match between two rivals. For example Manchester United vs. Manchester City
  • Double chance = the bet which says that one of the teams won´t lose, usually marked as 1X, X2 or 10 or 02
  • Ex aequo = two racers will finish on the same rank
  • Favourite = better team
  • Free bet = bet without any risk of losing your money (see the list of free bets in Bookies – entering bonuses and free bets section)
  • Handicap = virtual advantage or disadvantage in points
  • IBAN = International Bank Account Number (IBAN) – account number for overseas transactions
  • Single bet = the most common type of bet which can have 2 or 3 possible outcomes
  • Multiple bet = bet on more than one game. Overall odd is calculated by multiplication of all odds.
  • Odd = there is more odds types which include decimal and fractional
  • Lay = not to win bet. It means draw or lose of the team. The opposite is “Back”. Term “Lay” is used on Betting exchange markets.
  • Live bet = bet placed during the game
  • Money Line = American expression of bet on win of the team
  • Money management = when you want to make money on betting you have to create your own strategy called money management a follow it in either good or bad times. Please see more info in Money management article
  • Outsider = underdog, weaker team
  • Over = bet “Over” means that more points than stated will be achieved in the game. For example in football games Over 2.5 is bet which wins in case that more than 2,5 goals is scored (3, 4, 5 etc.). When only 0-2 goals is scored you lose your bet. Sometimes you can also see OVER 3 which means that bet wins in case when more than 4 goals is scored. If only 3 goals is scored the outcome is VOID which means that the stake is returned.
  • ROI = Return On Investment calculated as ROI = (win – stake) / stake
  • Rollover = the amount of stakes which you have to bet. It is often used in terms and conditions of bonuses. For example rollover 5x means that you have to bet the amount of bonus (bonuses) at least five times.
  • Spread = term used by American webs which has the same meaning as handicap which is virtual advantage of one of the teams
  • Surebet = that is a combination of bets on the same event which gives you guaranteed profit. Yes even this is possible. It happens sometimes that bookies offer different odds on the same event and when you combine them correctly you make profit in case of any outcome. Profit is usually only a few % and you have to be careful about differences in terms and conditions of cancelled bets by each bookie.
  • Under = bet on number of points in the game. For example bet under 2.5 goals means that only 0-2 goals will be scored in the game.
  • Underdog = outsider

  • Wager = American expression for a bet
  • Yield = profit / loss from deposit shown in %
  • Yield = (profit / (stake / 100) ) – 100
